What is Microfiber and Why Use It?

Microfiber is a synthetic material usually made from a blend of polyester and polyamide. Unlike traditional fabrics, the fibers are extremely small - about 1/100th the size of a human hair. The fibers are also "split" like an asterisk (*) allowing the fibers to collect and trap contaminants in the towel instead of just pushing them around like a traditional cotton towel.

They leave no dust or dirt behind like other towels, making them ideal for any cleaning task. In fact, you can use a microfiber towel dry for dusting and in just one swipe a dashboard will be perfectly clean with not a speck of dust.

They are ideal for polishing and removing wax. Microfiber tends to not scratch your finish like traditional towels can. Microfiber is also extremely absorbent, holding up to 8 times their weight in water making them ideal for toweling dry your vehicle. And because they are able to be laundered, they won't scratch your finish like a dirty chamois will.

There are as many opinions as there are types of towels on which towel should be used for what task. As a general guide, refer to the table below:

How do I Clean and Wash Microfiber Towels?

Microfiber towels can be washed over and over and reused. You can either wash them by hand if you have just a few, or in the washing machine, Use the following tips to get the best performance out of your towels:

For Best Results Use a Detergent Specific for Microfiber

Using a microfiber detergent will get your towels cleaner, ensure thorough rinsing, leave them soft like new and help extend their useful life further. If you don't have microfiber detergent, use a laundry detergent with no fabric softener. Microfiber towels are so absorbent that you will never be able to remove the fabric softener from the towels, and they will never work as well. Never use fabric softener or dryer sheets. You can also put in a teaspoon of distilled vinegar per towel for additional cleaning.

    Wash Only By Themselves

Microfiber will attract lint like a magnet, If you wash microfiber with your other cotton towels, the microfiber towels will collect all the lint from other towels, become contaminated and won't work as well.

Air Dry or Only Use Low Heat in the Dryer

Since microfiber is a synthetic product, too much heat will ruin the properties of the towels making them less effective, more stiff, brittle and shorten their useful life.

If you only have a few towels, we have found the best method is to wash them by hand in the sink and let them air dry.

How Should I Store My Microfiber Towels?

Microfiber has a natural static tendency and will pick up about anything around it including dust and dirt. When you are not using your microfiber towels it's best to store them in a plastic bag by themselves.

It is also suggested that you store your microfiber towels separately by how you use them. For example, you don't want to cross contaminate the towels that you use for cleaning glass with residue from towels that you use to clean wheels or remove wax.

How Do I Get the Most Use Out Of Microfiber Towels?

As you use your microfiber towels over and over, eventually they will become worn and stained depending on what you are using them for. For example, if it is time to replace the towels that you use to remove wax, re-purpose that towel to cleaning wheels or other dirty jobs in order to get the most use out of it.

Now you can get fast, commercial-quality results by using the same products the "pros" do - and by doing it yourself!

Jax Wax Car Care microfiber towels and microfiber detailing tools are of higher quality than than most "retail" microfiber car care products that sit on the "wax wall" vying for your hard earned dollars with slick labels and packaging.
