How to Care for Microfiber
Microfiber towels and tools have particular care requirements due to their unusual cleaning properties and composition. As you probably know, microfiber is excellent for dusting and scrubbing because of the static-charged, woven fibers. The combination of polyamide and polyester is incredibly strong and soft, and microfiber towels absorb 7 times their weight in moisture!
For such a technologically advanced fabric, proper care is surprisingly easy. No fabric softener, no bleach, no heat - that’s all you have to remember!
Wash your microfiber in the washing machine with detergent only. Tumble them dry on low heat or no heat. High heat will literally melt the fibers while fabric softener and bleach will eliminate the electric charge that makes microfiber so effective. Avoid those three laundry habits, and your microfiber will last indefinitely.
You might be wondering which detergent is best. Almost any detergent is suitable, but some are better than others. The primary concern is detergent residue; you want a detergent that is clean-rinsing. Powder laundry detergent very often leaves a soapy residue in fabric, and many liquid detergents contain strong perfumes and fabric softeners right inside the detergent. That’s great for clothes, but bad for microfiber.
Even if you have other clothes that could stand to be dried on low heat, don’t put them in with microfiber. The static nature of microfiber will attract every bit of lint from other garments. Wash and dry microfiber separately. NO DRYER SHEETS!
Tip: If you do wash your microfiber products in the washing machine, throw used ones in a separate bin from the regular laundry. This will prevent an accidental mix-up that could result in useless microfiber.
What is Microfiber and Why Use It?
Microfiber is a synthetic material usually made from a blend of polyester and polyamide. Unlike traditional fabrics, the fibers are extremely small - about 1/100th the size of a human hair. The fibers are also "split" like an asterisk (*) allowing the fibers to collect and trap contaminants in the towel instead of just pushing them around like a traditional cotton towel.
They leave no dust or dirt behind like other towels, making them ideal for any cleaning task. In fact, you can use a microfiber towel dry for dusting and in just one swipe a dashboard will be perfectly clean with not a speck of dust.
They are ideal for polishing and removing wax. Microfiber tends to not scratch your finish like traditional towels can. Microfiber is also extremely absorbent, holding up to 8 times their weight in water making them ideal for toweling dry your vehicle. And because they are able to be laundered, they won't scratch your finish like a dirty chamois will.
Why are Microfiber Towels Different Colors?
You want to use different towels for different tasks, For example, in a high volume detail shop, they might use blue for wax and polish, yellow for glass cleaning and green for cleaning interiors. That way you don't get any cross contamination on the towels. For example, you wouldn't use the same towel to clean glass after you have used it to remove wax on the car.
Which Microfiber Towel Should You Use?
Generally speaking, the more plush the microfiber towel is - the better it is for using it on your finish to eliminate the risk of scratching. Microfiber towels are made in different levels of softness. thickness and "plushness" for different cleaning and detailing tasks.

How do I Clean and Wash Microfiber Towels?
Microfiber towels can be washed over and over and reused. You can either wash them by hand if you have just a few, or in the washing machine.
For Best Results Use a Detergent Specific for Microfiber
Using a microfiber detergent will get your towels cleaner, ensure thorough rinsing, leave them soft like new and help extend their useful life further. If you don't have microfiber detergent, use a laundry detergent with no fabric softener. Microfiber towels are so absorbent that you will never be able to remove the fabric softener from the towels, and they will never work as well. Never use fabric softener or dryer sheets. You can also put in a teaspoon of distilled vinegar per towel for additional cleaning.
Wash Only By Themselves
Microfiber will attract lint like a magnet, If you wash microfiber with your other cotton towels, the microfiber towels will collect all the lint from other towels, become contaminated and won't work as well.
Air Dry or Only Use Low Heat in the Dryer
Since microfiber is a synthetic product, too much heat will ruin the properties of the towels making them less effective, more stiff, brittle and shorten their useful life.
If you only have a few towels, we have found the best method is to wash them by hand in the sink and let them air dry.
How Should I Store My Microfiber Towels?
Microfiber has a natural static tendency and will pick up about anything around it including dust and dirt. When you are not using your microfiber towels it's best to store them in a plastic bag by themselves.
It is also suggested that you store your microfiber towels separately by how you use them. For example, you don't want to cross contaminate the towels that you use for cleaning glass with residue from towels that you use to clean wheels or remove wax.
How Do I Get the Most Use Out Of Microfiber Towels?
As you use your microfiber towels over and over, eventually they will become worn and stained depending on what you are using them for. For example, if it is time to replace the towels that you use to remove wax, re-purpose that towel to cleaning wheels or other dirty jobs in order to get the most use out of it.
Now you can get fast, commercial-quality results by using the same products the "pros" do - and by doing it yourself!
Jax Wax Car Care microfiber towels and microfiber detailing tools are of higher quality than than most "retail" microfiber car care products that sit on the "wax wall" vying for your hard earned dollars with slick labels and packaging.
